Letter of Introduction & Abbreviated Resumé
|
My scientific training includes a B.Sc. in Zoology
and a M.Sc. in Ecology, both from UCD. I have extensive experience
in scientific research (behavioral ecology of primates in Sumatra,
Arctic Fox research on the Aleutian Islands); at the California
National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) & UCD (behavioral
biology, laboratory research in Reproductive Biology and Medical
Physiology) and as a Veterinary Assistant. I have significantly
expanded my scientific knowledge with these positions, which have
aided me in developing my abilities as a scientific and medical
illustrator.
As an illustrator, I continue to develop my professional
education with specialized training in the techniques of scientific
illustration through the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators,
based at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.. I attend national
training sessions every other year to continue to expand my abilities.
Other job positions that have increased my illustration knowledge
include: Principal Scientific Illustrator for the CNPRC; Illustrator
and Editorial Artist for the Anchorage Daily News in Anchorage,
Alaska; Graphic Artist and Illustrator for CH2M HILL Engineering;
and Freelance Illustrator for a broad variety of clients. Please
see the following abbreviated résumé for details
of these positions.
Medical and scientific illustrations require not
only an intricate knowledge of the science being portrayed, but
the ability to translate ideas and concepts to visual representations,
and the technical and creative skills to portray the ideas precisely.
It is critical to be scientifically accurate in every aspect of
each illustration, and I take pride in having been complimented
many times by publishers and clients on the results of taking
their initial concepts to a final illustration. Few illustrators
have both an advanced level of training in the sciences and the
artistic abilities to portray these concepts.
Combined, my education, professional training,
and experience have provided me with a high level of illustration
skills. As a medical illustrator, my scientific knowledge is further
refined to allow me to illustrate concepts to the cellular, molecular,
and conceptual level. My experiences as a veterinary technician
and research assistant at the CNPRC have also expanded my abilities
to both have an understanding of, and the ability to, observe
surgical and medical procedures and translate them into clear
illustrations.
